For De Echte Bakker Marten Boonstra in Akkrum, I had the pleasure of designing and painting a mural that brings together the characteristic elements of the bakery and the village.
Recognizable elements from Akkrum have been incorporated into the mural, such as the Akkrumer Jol with the bakery's house number. Naturally, the artisanal bakery products could not be missing either. For instance, the (tastiest) sugar bread was given a little crown as a nod to the Royal Sugar Bread for which the bakery is known.
Painting was a challenge: for a week, I worked in temperatures of no less than 36 degrees . It was certainly hot, but I still prefer sun to rain. That proved true once again, because a week later, when I delivered the mural, it was raining cats and dogs. As a mural artist, you simply always remain dependent on the weather (if it is an exterior wall you are painting).
It was extra special that this project received attention in both the Leeuwarder Courant and the Heerenveense Courant . The many enthusiastic reactions to the mural and the articles put a big smile on my face. That is ultimately what I do it for: creating art that touches people and gives a place even more character.
